Old man, when I die, know that it’ll be on top of your daughter. Sure, that’s going to horrify the shit out of her, but there’s also no other place that I’d rather shuffle off on. And when I die, I’m going to be my own man. I’ll be better than you, Makarov, and Acnolgia itself.

You’ll recognize that before you fart yourself into the grave.

I try so hard to support my daughter’s love for you, but in the end, you just disgust me so much that I hope no woman ever has the misfortune of being your girl for any extended period of time.

And you might beat me when I’m old and falling apart, but you already know you’ll never be able to beat me while I could do two-handed Crash, because well, I can’t do that anymore.

You really probably already missed your chance to beat me at my best.

That’s because you’re a petty little shit that I’m going to knock out for his sins one of these days.

And that day is getting closer and closer, like it or not.

Your daughter is already happy, so go right ahead and render yourself at least half-dead for my pleasure. And I’m up to the task. I can at least fuck a woman without breaking everything within a five mile radius.

Yes, and wouldn’t it be great if I died before you got to do that? You would live forever in my shadow. So don’t pray for my death as it gives you less time to grow up and become someone who can fill my pants out a little better than you do.

I’ll be putting you down in the dirt from my wheelchair, Laxus.

Young man, I entreat you to lose your bad attitude and all those nasty looks you give me.

If I’m lucky, you’ll figure out how to court a woman before I die so I can play with my grandchildren.

Old man, I can tell you right now that there’s no chance of either thing happening within the next decade.

If you’re lucky, I’ll remind my children to visit their grandfather’s grave every now and again.

If you’re lucky, I won’t tell show them all the pictures of you when you were a small child and you were just so cute.

Oh wait, I’m going to do that anyway.

I’m far too stubborn to die before I get what I want and what I want at this point is for my daughter to be happy and then some grandbabies. I’m sure if you’re not up to the task, she’ll find someone who is.

A Much-Needed Talk

cardsofliquor:

His questions were hard for her to answer, and Cana wasn’t sure she even wanted to know what she thought about them.  Unable to meet his eyes, she looked down at her glass, as if the answers were hidden in the wine.  Sadly, this time they weren’t.  Reading shapes in a glass had never been something she had been good at anyway.

“Mom talked about you, y’know.”  Cornelia Albarona had always told her daughter about the man whose blood she carried.  The tales were bedtime stories for the young girl, stories of a man who was so strong, he left cities in the dust behind him.  Cana still remembered those nights, sitting in bed with her mother, staring up at the darker brunette, hanging on her every word.

The very idea that she was descended from someone so strong made her feel proud of her parents.  When her mother died, she had been excited to find her father, but that had all gone differently than planned.  Still, life went on, and Cana had continued living, and believing in the man she watched from a distance.

“How did you know you loved her?”  That was the question she had always wondered, and as Cornelia wasn’t around to answer that, it was up to her father.  ”How can you tell if you’re really in love?  What if these things I feel for him change, and I hurt him even more?  You know how L…  How he reacts to things like that.  I don’t want anyone else to get hurt for my stupid mistake.

I love Fairy Tail, and I won’t sacrifice them for anyone.  Not even that idiotic boy who wants everything.”

Suddenly, Cana was asking him questions that she might have if they’d always been close. Gildarts felt so honored to be someone that she trusted with questions about love, although the only expertise he had was his age and the lessons he learned through his own failures.

“I don’t know if love is some wild, intangible, indescribable thing. For me, love was just this sense of contentment that I felt when I was with Cornelia. Our relationship was a lot of…” Sexual tension? No, he wasn’t going to say thing. “…well, we had a fiery relationship, but at night when we’d be laying there together, I just felt this peace, like I never wanted to leave. Like it was enough to just be there with Cornelia.”

And then the guild came and he looked down.

“But I thought then that I wasn’t ready to be content or happy. I thought I could walk away and become an adventurer and become powerful. In my heart, I believed that I was young and there was plenty of time for that.”

He hated saying to his daughter that he walked away from her because he thought he’d just fall in love later with someone else. It was the truth though. The shame he felt was indescribable, but he was too old and about two decades too late to undo his mistakes.

Gildarts said, “I don’t know whether or not you’re in love with that idiot. I don’t know whether or not he’s the right guy for you. What I know is that you’ve let him get to you, and you’ve gotten to him in a way nobody else has. You’re both such well-guarded people, but you let him get close enough to cause you to think about these things, and he let you get close enough to hurt him.”

He went back to chopping, because it was busy work and he really didn’t know what to add to that for a few minutes. Gildarts didn’t want Cana to rush into anything she didn’t want, but he didn’t want her to avoid something that would make her happy either. He wondered if maybe the conflict came from the fact that she was afraid of reaching for her own happiness.

Not that happiness was a guy, because for Cana, happiness was probably a much bigger picture. It was self-confidence, strength, friendship, loyalty, and many other things, only one of which was love. And Cana knew as well as he did that Laxus had his own picture of happiness that wasn’t really the same as hers. She was a part of his ‘win everything’ plan. The guild, the power, the girl…

He smiled a little and turned to her. “You’re a great woman, you know. Your mom would be really proud of you. I’m really proud of you, but I also worry that you’ll make my mistakes in life. So I’m sorry. I’m not trying to correct my mistakes through you; I just want you to be happy.”

Old man, I entreat you to lose your other arm and leg the next time you go on another one of those missions of yours.

If I’m lucky, you’ll just be a head and a torso by the next time you come back.

Young man, I entreat you to lose your bad attitude and all those nasty looks you give me.

If I’m lucky, you’ll figure out how to court a woman before I die so I can play with my grandchildren.

gildartsclive replied to your post: So, where are my lightning gingers?

You’re so mean to your future father-in-law. You can call me Dad if it makes you feel better.

I’ll call you a dead man. That’s what’s making me feel really good right about now.

You’ve always been such a cute little guy, Laxus.

Every time you give me that hateful look, I just remember that bright, happy smile you had when you were a little kid on the parade float.

[/gives Laxus the FT sign and a big grin]
